Badagry, Lagos State – November 10, 2025_ – Residents of Gbogbele community in Badagry West Local Council Development Area are on edge after a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer allegedly shot a woman during an early‑morning operation on Friday, November 7, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, two NIS teams arrived in Toyota Hilux vans and set up near a local bridge. The tension began when a resident asked the officers about their mission and insisted that the local council chairman be informed before any action was taken. The request apparently angered the officers, and the team leader ordered the arrest of the resident, identified by locals as former councillor Hon. Friday Gigonu. When Gigonu fled, officers gave chase.

During the pursuit, one officer fired a shot that missed its target and struck a woman who was resting in her room. The bullet pierced the wall of the house and hit her arm, shattering the bone. She was taken to Badagry General Hospital, where doctors confirmed the fracture and she remains under treatment.

A community leader, who spoke anonymously, described the scene: “She was lying down in her room when the bullet entered and struck her. The officers had come from Ropoji and were already in Gbogbele when this happened.” Another resident, Muyiwa, said the trouble started the day before when immigration officers seized a resident’s National Identification Number (NIN) card—a matter in which Hon. Gigonu had intervened. “By Friday morning they returned looking for him. When they spotted him, another argument broke out. One of the officers shot in his direction, but the bullet missed and hit the woman instead,” Muyiwa recounted.Immigration Officer Allegedly Shoots Woman in Badagry Community

As of the report, neither the Nigeria Immigration Service nor the Lagos State Police Command had issued an official statement. Repeated attempts to reach the NIS Public Relations Officer for the Seme Border Command were unsuccessful. The lack of comment has heightened anxiety, with locals accusing security personnel of harassment and excessive force.

Community leaders and human‑rights groups have called for an immediate, transparent investigation. “It is unacceptable for a law‑enforcement officer to fire a weapon in a residential area, injuring an innocent woman in her home. This must not be swept under the carpet,” a leader told Vanguard.

The incident has reignited concerns about the conduct and rules of engagement for security agencies operating in civilian neighborhoods. Residents demand accountability and swift justice for the injured woman.
