IWD 2026: UBTH CMD Calls for Greater Empowerment at LAPO Women’s Awards

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Thursday joined prominent women leaders to celebrate the 2026 LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award (LOWLA), held in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

The 14th edition of the award, themed “Give to Gain,” recognised outstanding women for their achievements and contributions across various sectors.

Chairing the event, Prof. Ize-Iyamu urged women to remain disciplined and focused in the pursuit of their goals, stressing that resilience and determination are critical to overcoming challenges and achieving success.

She commended the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) for sustaining the LOWLA initiative over the past 14 years, describing it as a strong platform for promoting women’s empowerment.

According to her, the award represents more than recognition, serving as a call to action for individuals and institutions to support and uplift one another in building a better society.

Highlighting the role of women in national development, she said, “As we navigate shifting economic tides, the resilience of our women remains our most stable currency. When a woman rises, a family rises. When women lead, communities prosper, and when women are empowered, nations are transformed.”

The UBTH CMD further celebrated women for their vision, value, and impact, encouraging them to continue striving toward their aspirations.
The event featured the presentation of awards to deserving women in different categories.

The LAPO Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on the Founding President of the African Women Empowerment Guild, Dr. (Mrs.) Nosakhare Aladeselu.

Other awardees included Nkechi Promise Ujunwa (professional category), Mrs. Adebukola Esther Taiwo (farming), and Animashaun Aminat Aderayo (business).

Dignitaries at the event included the founder of LAPO and LAPO Microfinance Bank, Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe; LAPO President, Barr. (Mrs.) Faith Negbe Osazuwa-Ojo; Chairperson, Board of Directors, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyefemi Obazee; and Director, Centre for Gender Studies, University of Benin, Prof. (Mrs.) Lucy Adesomon Okukpon.
