João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Free Transfer, Signs Until 2029.
Barcelona, Spain FC Barcelona have completed the permanent signing of Portuguese full back João Cancelo, bringing the experienced defender back to Camp Nou on a free transfer until June 2029.
The 32 year old returns for his third spell with the Catalan giants, having previously represented Barcelona on loan during the 2023/24 season from Manchester City and again during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign after joining from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
Barcelona confirmed that Cancelo arrives as a free agent after ending his contractual relationship with Al Hilal by mutual agreement. The move therefore allows the Spanish champions to reinforce their defensive options without paying a conventional transfer fee.
Flick’s Defensive Reinforcement
Cancelo’s return represents a significant addition to head coach Hansi Flick’s squad. The Portuguese defender’s ability to operate on either flank, combined with his attacking qualities and experience at the highest level, gives Barcelona greater tactical flexibility.
During his previous spells at the club, Cancelo made 65 appearances, scoring six goals and providing nine assists, according to Reuters. His performances under Flick in particular helped strengthen Barcelona’s desire to secure his services on a permanent basis.
The defender’s return also follows his recent medical examination in Barcelona, which he completed alongside fellow new arrival Rodri earlier this week. EFE reported that Cancelo was expected to sign a three-year contract running through 2029.
A Return Built on Determination
Cancelo’s route back to Barcelona was not straightforward. After his second loan spell ended, negotiations surrounding his future continued while he remained contracted to Al Hilal.
The Portuguese international eventually secured his release from the Saudi club, clearing the way for his return to Barcelona as a free agent. Spanish outlet AS reported that Cancelo had made clear his preference to return to Barça and was prepared to make personal financial concessions to facilitate the move.
The signing gives Barcelona an experienced option as they prepare to defend their domestic title and compete on multiple fronts during the 2026/27 season.
Cancelo, a product of Benfica’s academy, has also played for Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Al Hilal. He has won league titles in Italy, England and Germany and remains an established member of Portugal’s national team.
Barcelona’s decision to bring him back permanently underlines the club’s confidence in his ability to contribute immediately while adding depth and versatility to Flick’s defensive structure.
