A judge in Lagos’ Federal High Court has ordered Mrs. Martha Ude, the mother of a 19-year-old painter, Chinonso Udeh, to appear in court on November 1, 2024. Chinonso, who faces charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged cybercrime, pleaded guilty.
The EFCC’s investigation revealed Chinonso’s involvement in a suspected cybercrime ring in Lekki, leading to his arrest during a sting operation. Upon his arrest, an iPhone XR was seized and analyzed, uncovering incriminating documents. Chinonso’s statement was taken under caution.
When questioned, Chinonso explained that he was learning painting and lived with a church member. However, his lack of family support in court raised concerns for Justice Ayokunle Faji, who questioned why only a friend accompanied him.
In response, the judge directed Chinonso to ensure his mother’s presence at the next hearing, warning of possible imprisonment if she failed to appear. The EFCC was instructed to provide Chinonso with food during his remand, and both he and his mother were advised to bring identification to court.
According to the EFCC, Chinonso allegedly impersonated a white man on Instagram to obtain money between January and April 2024, in violation of the Cybercrime Prohibition Act. The case is set for continuation on November1, 2024.
