“Kogi Voter Card Revalidation: Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Calls for Mass Participation Ahead of Future Elections”

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has urged residents of Kogi State to actively participate in the ongoing voter card revalidation exercise conducted by Nigeria’s electoral body, emphasizing that citizen participation remains essential to strengthening democratic accountability and credible elections.

The lawmaker, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, made the appeal while addressing constituents, encouraging eligible voters to update and validate their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registration process.

According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, voter card revalidation is not merely an administrative procedure but a civic responsibility that ensures citizens retain their constitutional power to influence governance through elections. She stressed that active voter participation remains one of the most effective tools for promoting transparency, accountability, and responsive leadership in Nigeria’s democratic system.

Strengthening Democratic Participation

The senator highlighted that accurate voter records are crucial for credible electoral outcomes, noting that revalidation helps eliminate irregularities within the voter register while allowing citizens who have relocated or updated personal information to remain eligible voters.

She called on youths, women, and first-time voters across Kogi State to take advantage of the exercise, describing political participation as a shared responsibility necessary for sustainable development and inclusive governance.

Akpoti-Uduaghan further encouraged community leaders, civil society groups, and grassroots organizations to mobilize awareness campaigns to improve turnout, particularly in rural communities where voter registration participation has historically lagged.

INEC’s Ongoing Electoral Preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission has continued nationwide voter registration and revalidation initiatives aimed at improving the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral database ahead of future elections. Electoral experts note that periodic updates to voter registers are internationally recognized best practices designed to enhance transparency and prevent electoral disputes.

Political analysts say increased public awareness campaigns by elected officials could significantly boost voter participation, especially among young Nigerians who constitute a large percentage of the country’s voting population but often record lower turnout rates.

Civic Engagement and Accountability

Observers argue that calls such as Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reflect growing efforts among political actors to deepen democratic engagement beyond election cycles. Analysts also emphasize that voter education remains a key factor in reducing voter apathy and strengthening institutional trust.

As Nigeria continues to consolidate its democratic institutions, stakeholders maintain that inclusive participation in electoral processes  beginning with voter registration and revalidation  remains fundamental to credible governance and citizen representation.
