Commuters and Drivers Express Concerns Over Deteriorating Metal Net Barricade in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos
The metal net barricade along the Ojodu-Berger corridor in Lagos State is drawing criticism from motorists and pedestrians alike. Our correspondent observed portions of the barricade dismantled, posing a hazard for those using the adjacent walkway. Inaugurated by the former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, in May 2017, the metal net served as a deterrent for pedestrians to utilize the newly constructed pedestrian bridge.
Transport workers in the area attribute the collapse of the barricade to rust affecting the foundation of its supporting pillars. Despite being toppled weeks ago, the fallen metal net now serves as impromptu luggage and vendor platforms. Concerns are raised about the remaining sections facing a similar fate due to weakening foundations and rusted nuts.
Lola Omololu, a park-based trader, anticipates the eventual collapse of the remaining metal nets and calls for their prompt replacement. Pedestrians express frustration as the damaged barricade now contradicts its initial purpose, urging the state government to remove and replace the eyesore.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
