The former Nigeria International and captain, John Mikel Obi believes that the Super Eagles can emerge as winner of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Even with speculations revolving around José Peseiro’s 25-man list, the three-time African champions are still much of the pundits’ favourites to win the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

However, Mikel, who was in the side that won the 2013 AFCON title in South Africa a decade ago with the Super Eagles has backed the Portuguese gaffer to lead the team to a fourth title win.

“Nigeria will win the 2023 AFCON and Victor Osimhen will win player of the tournament.

“When it comes to the striking department, I think right now we are blessed. We are blessed with a lot of players there. [Taiwo] Awoniyi is doing well for Nottingham Forest and also for the national team.

“We also have Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, who is doing really well. So we are quite blessed when it comes to striking force. But we just have to fix some little issues with the defence and goalkeeping.

I think if we can be able to do that, we’ve got a very good chance to win it,” Mikel said in an interview with CNN World Sport.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
