“Military Assures Tight Security Across North East Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir Celebrations”

The Nigerian military has assured residents of the North East region of robust security arrangements ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) celebrations, despite renewed concerns over threats posed by insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Military authorities stated that coordinated operations involving ground troops, air surveillance units, intelligence teams, and other security agencies have been intensified across key states in the region to guarantee peaceful celebrations for Muslim faithful and residents during the festive period.

The reassurance comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, where insurgent activities have continued to challenge civilian safety and humanitarian operations. Security officials noted that troops under Operation Hadin Kai remain on high alert to prevent attacks on worship centres, markets, highways, and other public gathering locations during the celebrations.

According to military sources, strategic patrols and stop and search operations have already been strengthened around major towns, border communities, and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps to deter criminal elements seeking to exploit the festive season.

Residents across the region were also urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives by promptly reporting suspicious movements or abandoned items. Authorities emphasized that public safety remains a collective responsibility, particularly during periods of increased travel and mass gatherings.

The North East has remained a focal point of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency campaign for more than a decade, with security forces sustaining operations against extremist groups responsible for attacks, abductions, and displacement of thousands of civilians. While the military has recorded significant territorial gains in recent years, sporadic attacks and ambushes continue to pose security challenges in remote communities.

Security analysts say the military’s latest assurance reflects ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and defence authorities to sustain confidence among residents and prevent disruptions during one of Islam’s most important religious celebrations.

Community leaders and civil society groups have also called for increased collaboration between local vigilante networks, traditional institutions, and formal security agencies to maintain peace throughout the Sallah period.

As preparations for Eid-el-Kabir continue nationwide, authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring that citizens celebrate without fear, while encouraging adherence to security advisories and lawful conduct.
