NAWOJ Edo Marks International Women’s Day with Visit to Benin Home of the Elderly

The Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with a charity visit and donation to the Catholic Home of the Elderly at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City.

The outreach formed part of the association’s activities to mark the global celebration, themed “Give to Gain.”
Led by its Chairperson, Comrade Habiba Sam, members of the NAWOJ executive and other members of the association presented food items and toiletries to the elderly residents of the home.

Speaking during the visit, Comrade Sam said the gesture was aimed at showing love and care to the elderly and making them feel remembered and valued.

“We are pleased to be here to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day with you. We know that at this stage of life, many elderly persons may feel forgotten.

We hope our visit brings you joy and good memories and makes the day remarkable for all of us,” she said.

Responding on behalf of the Directress of the home, Rev. Sister Gloria Ochei, caregiver Mrs. Rose John expressed appreciation to the women journalists for the visit and their donations.

She thanked NAWOJ for choosing the facility as part of their IWD celebration and prayed for God’s blessings upon the association.

In an emotional moment, the oldest resident of the home, 111-year-old Mrs. Comfort Solomon, offered prayers for the journalists, thanking them for their kindness and support.

Mrs. John also appealed to the visiting journalists to help raise awareness about the home through their various media platforms.

“I plead with you to help us publicize the existence of this home so that more people can support the care of these elderly women.
