Women’s organisations in Edo State, led by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), have intensified calls for inclusive governance with a statewide rally advocating the passage of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

The advocacy campaign, held across constituency offices in the senatorial district, drew participation from women political aspirants, civil society groups and supporters.

Among those at the forefront were NAWOJ Chairperson, Habiba Sam, and FIDA Chairperson, Francisca Elema, alongside representatives of groups including FOMWAN, NILO, NCWS, 100 Women Lobby Group and AWLA.

The protesters called for the urgent passage of the Special Seats for Women Bill, stressing that increased female representation in governance would strengthen democracy and ensure broader inclusion in decision-making.

As part of the exercise, a formal petition was presented to political office holders, urging their backing for the proposed legislation aimed at expanding opportunities for women in politics.

Member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency, Hon. Billy Osawaru, who received the petition, assured the group of his continued support.

“I have always pushed for this, and I will continue to do so. We are looking at it very well to ensure no one is left out, especially persons with disabilities,” he said.

Osawaru reaffirmed his commitment to the 35 per cent affirmative action for women and pledged to present the petition before the House. He added, “I am a HeForShe,” reiterating his support for women-focused initiatives.

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Esosa Iyawe (Oredo Federal Constituency) and Hon. Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia North-East/Ovia South-West), also received the petition through their representatives.

The rally marks a significant push by women’s groups in Edo State to advance gender equality and secure greater political representation for women in Nigeria.
