Nigeria Celebrates Historic Leap in 2026 Global University Rankings as UI, UNILAG, Others Record Best Ever Performance

Nigeria has recorded its strongest performance to date in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with 24 universities earning places on the prestigious global list, marking a significant milestone for the country’s higher education sector.

The Federal Government has welcomed the achievement, describing it as a reflection of sustained efforts to improve the quality of tertiary education, research excellence, academic innovation, and institutional competitiveness. Officials said the improved rankings demonstrate the growing impact of investments in Nigeria’s universities despite persistent challenges facing the education sector.

Leading the country’s performance is the University of Ibadan (UI), which maintained its position as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university, followed by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Other Nigerian institutions featured in the rankings include Ahmadu Bello University, Covenant University, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Bayero University, University of Benin, University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and several others, bringing the total number of ranked Nigerian universities to 24 the highest ever recorded.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluate universities using key performance indicators including teaching quality, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and engagement with industry. The rankings are widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential assessments of higher education institutions.

Education stakeholders have described Nigeria’s improved showing as an encouraging development that could enhance the global reputation of the country’s universities, attract more international collaborations, and strengthen research partnerships. However, analysts also note that sustaining this progress will require continued investment in research funding, academic infrastructure, staff development, digital innovation, and policies that promote excellence across the higher education system.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting reforms aimed at raising the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities, expressing optimism that even more institutions will secure stronger positions in future international rankings.
