“Nigeria Demands Justice as Two Citizens Are Killed in South Africa, Renews Call for Protection Against Xenophobic Violence”

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa, calling for a swift, transparent investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government described the deaths as deeply disturbing and urged South African authorities to ensure justice is served without delay. The government also stressed the importance of safeguarding the lives, rights, and dignity of all foreign nationals residing in the country.

According to the ministry, the latest incident has heightened concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, where sporadic attacks linked to xenophobic violence have claimed lives and destroyed businesses over the years. Abuja reiterated that such acts undermine the longstanding diplomatic, economic, and historical ties between Africa’s two largest economies.

The Federal Government extended its condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerians abroad through diplomatic engagement. Nigerian officials also called on South African law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

The incident has once again reignited conversations about xenophobia and the need for stronger measures to prevent attacks targeting foreign nationals. Civil society groups and members of the Nigerian community in South Africa have repeatedly urged authorities to improve security and strengthen mechanisms for protecting migrants.

Nigeria and South Africa share significant political and economic relations and have historically collaborated on continental peace, trade, and development initiatives. However, repeated episodes of violence against foreign nationals have periodically strained bilateral relations, prompting diplomatic engagements aimed at preventing future attacks.

The Federal Government expressed confidence that South African authorities would act decisively to uphold justice, reinforce the rule of law, and reassure affected communities that those responsible for the killings will be held accountable.
