Nigeria’s Medical Laboratory Council Reaffirms Commitment to Accurate Test Results and Stronger Patient Safety.
The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Nigerians receive accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory test results, while strengthening patient safety and improving confidence in the country’s healthcare system.
The Council said quality laboratory services remain a critical pillar of effective healthcare delivery, noting that accurate diagnostic testing plays a vital role in disease detection, treatment decisions, and public health surveillance. It emphasized that maintaining high professional and ethical standards across medical laboratories is essential to safeguarding the health of Nigerians.
According to the Council, it continues to intensify regulatory oversight of medical laboratories nationwide through accreditation, routine inspections, quality assurance programmes, and the licensing of qualified medical laboratory scientists. These measures are designed to ensure laboratories comply with established national and international standards, reducing the risk of diagnostic errors and enhancing patient outcomes.
The MLSCN also encouraged healthcare providers and members of the public to utilize only licensed and accredited medical laboratories for diagnostic services. It warned that patronizing unregistered facilities could expose patients to inaccurate test results, delayed treatment, and avoidable health complications.
The Council further reiterated its resolve to collaborate with government institutions, healthcare professionals, and development partners to strengthen Nigeria’s diagnostic capacity, improve healthcare quality, and promote public trust in laboratory medicine.
Health experts have consistently identified reliable laboratory diagnostics as a cornerstone of modern healthcare, particularly in managing infectious diseases, non communicable illnesses, and public health emergencies. The Council’s reassurance comes amid ongoing efforts to improve healthcare standards and expand access to quality diagnostic services across Nigeria.
