Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has ended, with FIFA confirming DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament. The decision comes after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive CAF play-off tie in November 2026
The NFF’s appeal sought to overturn the result, which saw Nigeria lose to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw. However, FIFA’s latest communication makes no reference to any amendment to the qualified teams, indicating that the original result will stand.
DR Congo will now face the winner of the clash between New Caledonia and Jamaica on March 31, with a spot at the World Cup up for grabs. The play-offs will kick off on March 26, with New Caledonia taking on Jamaica, while Bolivia faces Suriname
