On August 9, 2024, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) made a significant breakthrough in Anambra State by apprehending a suspect who had been impersonating a Nigerian Navy rating and engaging in fraudulent activities. The arrest was made on August 6, 2024, at Kwata Junction in Awka, during a routine visibility patrol by NSCDC operatives.NSCDC Arrests Impersonator Posing as Naval Rating in Anambra

The suspect, identified as Chukwugozirim Christian, a 39-year-old male hailing from Nnobi in the Idemili North Local Government Area, was caught displaying behavior that raised suspicions among the patrol officers. NSCDC Commandant for Anambra State, Maku Olatunde, provided details during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Awka, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in maintaining public safety.

Olatunde noted that the operation was part of an ongoing effort to enforce directives from the NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, aimed at preventing criminal elements from disrupting the peace in the state, particularly in light of the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. He remarked, “Our personnel were on patrol to prevent undesirable elements from causing chaos among law-abiding residents. The suspect’s unusual appearance while impersonating a military officer caught our operatives’ attention, leading to his prompt apprehension.”

Upon being taken into custody, Christian claimed to be a naval rating. However, the NSCDC promptly contacted the Naval Base in Onitsha to verify his claims. The naval authorities confirmed that he was indeed an impersonator and had no ties to the Nigerian Navy.

Further investigations revealed a wealth of incriminating materials at the suspect’s residence. A search yielded military gear, including a walkie-talkie, a black beret and belt, a complete blue combat uniform, a lanyard, camouflage attire, a machete, a white naval shirt, and a blue belt. These items underscored the suspect’s deceitful activities and intentions.

Olatunde emphasized that the arrest of this fake naval rating reflects the NSCDC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens from impostors and criminal activities. He stated, “The corps is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of Anambra State residents, and we will take decisive action against anyone who threatens their well-being.”

In light of this incident, the NSCDC’s Intelligence and Investigation Department has been directed to launch a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend any accomplices who may have assisted Christian in his fraudulent activities. Olatunde assured the public that the command would pursue this investigation vigorously and that the suspect would face legal consequences upon its completion.

He urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the NSCDC. “We encourage the public to provide timely and accurate information that can help us combat crime and criminality in the state,” he added.

The NSCDC’s successful operation against impersonation is a reminder of the importance of maintaining security and integrity within the ranks of law enforcement and military personnel. The actions taken by the NSCDC not only protect citizens from fraud but also uphold the reputation of legitimate security forces.
