“NSCDC Intensifies Security Readiness as FCT Command Retrains Personnel in Advanced Weapon Handling”

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has disclosed that it has successfully retrained approximately 65 percent of its personnel in weapon handling and operational safety since 2023, as part of broader efforts to strengthen security operations across Abuja and surrounding communities.

According to the command, the retraining initiative is designed to improve professionalism, operational discipline, tactical response, and responsible firearm usage among officers deployed to protect critical national assets and infrastructure within the Federal Capital Territory.

FCT Command officials revealed that the programme forms part of a long-term capacity building strategy aimed at ensuring that at least 85 percent of personnel receive updated weapon handling and combat readiness training by 2026.

The development comes amid growing security concerns in parts of Nigeria’s capital region, where authorities have continued to reinforce intelligence gathering, anti crime patrols, and rapid response mechanisms against threats such as kidnapping, vandalism, and attacks on public infrastructure.

Speaking on the exercise, NSCDC leadership emphasized that continuous retraining remains essential in adapting to evolving security challenges and maintaining international best practices in law enforcement operations. The command noted that officers undergoing the programme are exposed to modern firearm management techniques, rules of engagement, crisis response procedures, and safety protocols intended to reduce operational risks while enhancing public confidence.

Security analysts say the renewed emphasis on tactical retraining reflects increasing recognition among Nigerian security agencies of the importance of professionalism and accountability in internal security management. Abuja, as Nigeria’s administrative and diplomatic hub, remains a high-priority zone for strategic security operations.

The NSCDC has in recent years expanded its operational footprint across the country through specialized training, community engagement initiatives, and inter-agency collaborations with other security institutions. Authorities believe such investments in personnel development are critical to improving response effectiveness and safeguarding lives and public assets.

The FCT Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining regular retraining programmes and improving operational standards as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security architecture within the nation’s capital.
