The integrity of the Benin Traditional Council’s Dispute Resolution Committee has come under public scrutiny following allegations of bias and compromise against its chairman, Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin.
A statement defending the committee described the allegations as a calculated campaign by dissatisfied individuals whose attempts to influence the council’s decisions allegedly failed.
According to the statement, the committee, under the leadership of Chief Osaro Idah, has over the years handled several disputes involving inheritance, land ownership, and chieftaincy matters within the Benin Kingdom, with decisions said to be based strictly on fairness and traditional justice.
The statement maintained that some persons unhappy with the committee’s verdicts resorted to spreading falsehoods after allegedly failing to compromise members of the panel through financial inducements.
It further claimed that accusations of bias and personal vendetta against the Obazelu were aimed at discrediting the dispute resolution process and undermining public confidence in the Benin Traditional Council.
Describing the allegations as “baseless and malicious,” the statement insisted that the committee remains committed to upholding truth, justice, and the long-standing traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
The defence of the committee comes amid growing public discussions surrounding recent dispute resolutions handled by the traditional institution.
