Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, earned wide praise after personally intervening to rescue victims of a fatal motor accident along the Benin–Auchi Road, shortly after the bypass.
The Governor, who was on his way to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area with his convoy, ran into a heavy gridlock caused by the crash. He immediately alighted to assess the situation and discovered several victims lying critically injured, many bleeding profusely, while bystanders stood idly by, recording videos instead of rendering help.
Move by the condition of the victims, Governor Okpebholo ordered two of his security Hilux vans to be converted into emergency transport vehicles. He personally supervised as the injured, including a severely wounded woman, were carefully lifted and rushed to hospital for urgent treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred when the driver of a white Toyota Venza with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW drove against traffic, colliding with three fully loaded commercial minibuses. The impact left scores injured and caused a major traffic snarl.
Governor Okpebholo remained at the scene until he was assured the victims had been safely conveyed to a medical facility under police escort, before continuing his trip to Irrua.
His swift response drew admiration from motorists and residents, who described him as a humane and God-fearing leader.
“Before the Governor arrived, people were only taking pictures and videos. But he came, took charge, and ensured the victims were rescued. This is the kind of leader we need one who leads with compassion and action,” an eyewitness said.
