“Oyo Trains More Than 300 Teachers in New Climate Literacy Drive to Strengthen Environmental Education in Schools”

The Oyo State Government has unveiled a climate literacy programme aimed at equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to promote environmental awareness, climate action and sustainable practices among students.

More than 300 teachers have reportedly been trained under the initiative, marking a significant step towards integrating climate education into learning environments across the state. The programme is expected to help educators better explain issues such as climate change, environmental degradation, sustainability and the importance of community based climate action.

The initiative comes as Oyo State continues to expand its focus on climate governance and environmental resilience. In recent months, the state government has pursued broader climate-related measures, including efforts to strengthen climate governance across ministries, local government areas and other public institutions.

The training of teachers is particularly significant because schools remain a key platform for shaping the environmental attitudes and behaviours of younger generations. Earlier climate education initiatives in Oyo have also focused on building teachers’ capacity to teach climate change, green skills and environmental responsibility, while encouraging the formation of environmental clubs in schools.

By expanding climate literacy among educators, the programme could help students develop a clearer understanding of the environmental challenges affecting their communities and the practical steps required to respond to them. These may include responsible waste management, conservation, climate adaptation and other sustainable practices.

The move also aligns with growing calls for climate education to become a stronger part of Nigeria’s education system, particularly as communities across the country face increasing environmental pressures. For Oyo, the latest programme represents an effort to ensure that climate awareness extends beyond government policy and becomes part of everyday learning in schools.

The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on sustained teacher support, the availability of learning resources and the effective translation of climate knowledge into practical action within schools and communities.
