The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the brutal murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
Nwafor was apprehended on July 25, 2025, with assistance from members of the Umueri village in Ogbunike after the victim’s mutilated body was discovered in a soakaway pit an incident that sparked widespread outrage and panic across the community.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who remains at large. She admitted to being summoned after the murder to clean up the scene and disclosed that the body parts were sold to native doctors believed to be involved in ritual practices.
”She further revealed how they sell the body parts to different evil native doctors in the area,” the police statement read.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to Elobisi’s residence under the pretext of offering her medication. Acting on Nwafor’s confession, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on July 29 raided the shrine of a native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, in Itima Amawa village, Ogbunike. Several human body parts concealed in cellophane bags were recovered at the scene.
The Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the killing as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway and a manhunt has been launched for the fugitive suspect and other collaborators involved in human trafficking and ritual killings.
The command urged members of the public to volunteer any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation, promising full protection for informants.
