The Zone 16 Police Command announced the detention of officers linked to a N10 million extortion case. The officers have been held since October 30, following orders for an investigation from the new Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the zone, who assumed office on October 21.

A statement from the zone clarified that these officers are facing disciplinary measures, countering claims by a human rights activist that he was responsible for recovering the money. The zone’s spokesperson explained that all key personnel, including the AIG, are newly appointed and immediately took action upon learning of the case, with the money being returned on November 5.

The statement added that the human rights activist and his associates were invited on October 30 but only responded on November 5. On that day, the AIG paused a meeting to address the activist’s concerns, who reportedly became confrontational during their interaction. Ultimately, the activist witnessed the handover of the recovered funds.

The AIG reaffirmed the zone’s strict stance against corruption and misconduct, aligning with national policies on zero tolerance for extortion and human rights abuses.
