Police Foil Major Rail Infrastructure Theft in Oyo, Recover ₦200 Million Worth of Stolen Tracks”

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected railway infrastructure vandals and recovered stolen rail tracks valued at approximately ₦200 million, in what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against the vandalism of critical national assets.

According to the police, the suspects were intercepted while allegedly transporting the stolen rail tracks, which were reportedly destined for Lagos. The recovered materials are believed to have been removed from railway infrastructure, raising concerns over the growing threat of vandalism targeting Nigeria’s transportation network.

Police authorities disclosed that the operation followed intelligence-led investigations aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal theft and movement of railway materials. The suspects are currently in custody as investigators work to determine the full scope of the operation, identify other accomplices, and establish the origin and intended buyers of the recovered rail tracks.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and warned individuals involved in the vandalism of government assets to desist or face the full weight of the law. Security agencies have also emphasized that the destruction and theft of railway infrastructure pose serious risks to public safety, economic development, and the efficient movement of passengers and goods across the country.

Railway vandalism has remained a persistent challenge in Nigeria, often resulting in costly repairs, disruptions to rail services, and setbacks to ongoing investments in modern transportation infrastructure. Authorities continue to encourage members of the public to provide timely information that could assist in preventing similar crimes and protecting critical national assets.

The Oyo State Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing and assured that all individuals connected to the alleged crime would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
