Police in manhunt for fleeing nurse over failed abortion

In a recent incident in Oke-Owa, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, a nurse is currently on the run after allegedly performing an abortion on Deborah Sokoya. The abortion reportedly failed, resulting in severe bleeding and the subsequent hospitalization of Sokoya.

According to a police source, Sokoya had informed her partner, Peter Balogun, that she would be visiting her elder sister, Mutiat Sokoya. Upon reaching Mutiat’s house in Iperin, Ijebu-Ode, Deborah was lured by her sister into undergoing the alleged abortion procedure.

As a result of the procedure, Sokoya experienced uncontrolled bleeding and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment. The Police in manhunt have revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that Balogun had previously financed another abortion for Sokoya in 2024

The Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that both Mutiat and Balogun have been detained for questioning. Odutola further added, “Our preliminary investigations further showed that the complainant had also financed another abortion on the same girlfriend in September 2024. He is being interrogated as well. However, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing nurse and others who participated in the abortion.”

The police are currently conducting a manhunt for the nurse involved in the failed abortion. The investigation aims to bring all individuals responsible for the illegal procedure to justice.

It is important to note that performing abortions without proper medical authorization is illegal in Nigeria, except in cases where the life of the mother is at risk. This incident sheds light on the dangerous consequences of illegal abortions and the need for comprehensive reproductive healthcare services.
