The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the decomposed body of photojournalist Ayo Aiyepeku, who was allegedly murdered by Oluwapelumi Adebayo, an officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service, in Lokoja.
The corpse was discovered on Sunday evening in a bush near the JAMB office in Zone 8, Lokoja, after residents reported a foul odour in the area. Police operatives responded and found the remains, which have since been deposited at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital.
Police spokesperson William Aya told journalists that a discreet investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the killing. He urged the public, including the victim’s family and colleagues, to assist with credible information to support the investigation.
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has also promised that justice will be served. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the governor directed security agencies to ensure a thorough probe into the incident. He assured the public that the government would not rest until the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice.
The government also confirmed that investigations are ongoing not only into the murder of Aiyepeku but also into the suspicious death of the prime suspect, Oluwapelumi Adebayo. Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by volunteering useful information.
Members of Aiyepeku’s family have made passionate appeals to both the police and the Kogi State Government, demanding a full and transparent investigation into the journalist’s death. His elder brother, Timothy Aiyepeku, and his uncle, Ibikunle Jide, called for justice and accountability.
Ayo Aiyepeku was reportedly killed on Tuesday night by Adebayo in an office near the Kogi Government House. The suspect allegedly stuffed the body into a freezer before dumping it in a bush, where it was eventually discovered.
The motive behind the murder remains unclear, and police are yet to provide details regarding the suspect’s own death. However, the Command insists that no effort will be spared in ensuring that justice is served.
