Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Tension reportedly surfaced at the Federal Ministry of Defence in Abuja as security personnel prevented a group of retired military personnel from staging a protest over outstanding pension adjustments and other welfare-related entitlements.

The development comes against the backdrop of persistent concerns among Nigerian military veterans over delays in the implementation and payment of approved pension increases. The latest confrontation has again drawn attention to the welfare of retired personnel who served in the country’s armed forces.

Reports indicate that police officers and soldiers were deployed around the Defence Ministry premises, blocking the ex-servicemen from gaining access to the facility for their planned demonstration. The protesters were reportedly seeking government action on unpaid pension adjustments and related arrears.

The reported incident highlights a longstanding dispute between sections of the military veterans’ community and government authorities over delayed payments.

In July 2026, the Defence Headquarters said it was working towards implementing an approved salary increase and corresponding pension adjustments for retired military personnel through the appropriate statutory processes. The assurance was given during a strategic engagement between senior military officials and representatives of veterans’ associations in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters also said veterans’ welfare remained a priority, pointing to efforts aimed at improving healthcare, pension payments and broader welfare packages for retired personnel.

However, the continued complaints from veterans suggest that implementation and payment remain significant concerns for some retirees.

The dispute over military pensions is not new. In December 2024, retired military personnel protested at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja over unpaid entitlements, including salary-related pension adjustments, palliatives and other benefits. The protesters said the Defence Ministry had completed its part of the process and that the remaining issue was the provision of funds for payment.

Earlier protests have also centred on the Security Debarment Allowance and other outstanding obligations owed to retired personnel. In 2022, ex-servicemen threatened to shut down the Ministry of Defence over delays in the payment of allowances and minimum-wage-related arrears.

The recurrence of such protests underscores a broader question about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s system for administering retirement benefits to former members of the Armed Forces.

For veterans, pension payments are not merely administrative matters but essential sources of livelihood after years of military service. Delays in implementing approved adjustments can have significant consequences, particularly amid rising living costs.

At the same time, the deployment of security personnel to prevent access to a government facility reflects the authorities’ responsibility to maintain public order and protect critical government infrastructure. Any response to the grievances, however, will need to balance security considerations with the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful expression and lawful assembly.

The latest incident therefore places renewed pressure on the Federal Government and relevant defence and pension authorities to provide clarity on the status of outstanding payments, communicate realistic timelines and ensure that eligible veterans receive approved entitlements.

For Obaland magazine, the issue goes beyond a single protest. It raises questions about how a nation honours those who served in its security institutions and whether approved welfare measures are being translated into actual financial relief for retired personnel.

A transparent resolution, supported by clear communication and timely payment of verified entitlements, could help prevent further confrontation while strengthening confidence between the government and Nigeria’s military veterans.
