Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to address world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 23, 2026, as Nigeria prepares to use the global platform to highlight its economic reform programme and promote stronger regional cooperation on West African border security.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed the planned participation following a briefing with President Tinubu on preparations for the annual UN gathering. TheCable and The Guardian Nigeria reported that Tinubu has confirmed his attendance and is expected to participate in several high-level engagements during the September meetings.

The 81st UN General Assembly formally opens on September 8, while the high-level general debate is scheduled to run from September 22 to 26, with an additional sitting on September 28, according to the United Nations.

Ibrahim said Tinubu’s appearance would provide an opportunity for Nigeria to present the reforms being pursued by his administration to an international audience. The president is also expected to participate in side events focusing on areas including energy, education and healthcare.

Nigeria to spotlight West African border security

A major issue expected to feature in Nigeria’s international engagements is border policing across West Africa.

According to Ibrahim, Nigeria is working with the United Nations on initiatives aimed at improving border security, particularly in response to the challenges created by porous borders across the region.

The issue carries wider implications for West Africa, where weak border controls have been linked to the movement of weapons, illicit goods and armed groups across national boundaries. Nigeria has increasingly advocated stronger regional and international cooperation as part of efforts to address transnational security threats.

Ibrahim said the UN platform would provide an opportunity for Nigeria to seek wider international backing for the regional border-policing initiative.

Tinubu’s return to the UN podium

Tinubu’s planned appearance will mark his return to personally addressing the UN General Assembly after he attended the 78th session in 2023.

At the 79th and 80th sessions, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented the president. During the 80th session in September 2025, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s national statement on Tinubu’s behalf.

Tinubu’s 2023 UN address placed significant emphasis on Africa’s development, international cooperation, economic transformation and the need for greater global commitment to African priorities. Official UN records show that he called for stronger international partnership to support Africa’s development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

His return to the General Assembly therefore provides an opportunity for the Nigerian government to present an updated account of its domestic economic programme while outlining its priorities on regional security and international cooperation.

Broader global issues on the agenda

The 81st UN General Assembly is expected to bring together heads of state and government from across the world for discussions on international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change and other global challenges.

The United Nations has announced the theme for the 81st session as “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

The September programme will also include a series of high-level meetings, including discussions on the right to development, sea-level rise, pandemic prevention and preparedness, and the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.

For Nigeria, the gathering offers a significant diplomatic platform at a time when the country is seeking greater international investment, stronger economic partnerships and enhanced cooperation on security and development.

Possible engagement with US President

Nigeria’s UN envoy also indicated that there could be a meeting between Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

However, such a meeting should be treated as a possibility rather than a confirmed engagement unless both governments formally announce it.

Tinubu’s broader diplomatic programme is expected to focus on strengthening Nigeria’s international partnerships and attracting support for national development priorities.

What to watch for in Tinubu’s address

Beyond the scheduled speech, attention is likely to centre on how the Nigerian president presents the country’s economic reforms, security priorities and broader vision for Africa’s role in global affairs.

Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most influential states and a major contributor to regional diplomacy. Its position gives Tinubu an opportunity to link Nigeria’s domestic priorities with broader African concerns, particularly development financing, security cooperation, energy transition and reform of international institutions.

The 81st General Assembly will also provide a platform for Nigeria to reinforce its diplomatic message that challenges affecting West Africa require coordinated regional and international responses.

As preparations continue ahead of September’s gathering, the Nigerian delegation is expected to use the UN platform to promote the country’s interests while engaging global leaders on issues affecting Nigeria, West Africa and the wider African continent.

For Obaland magazine, Tinubu’s planned appearance is significant not merely as a presidential engagement but as an opportunity to assess how Nigeria positions itself within an evolving global order and whether its diplomatic messaging translates into stronger partnerships, investment and practical international cooperation.
