“Police Uncover Fake Kidnap Plot in Anambra as Couple Allegedly Attempts ₦240,000 Family Extortion”

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects over an alleged staged kidnapping scheme reportedly orchestrated by a young woman and her boyfriend in an attempt to extort ₦240,000 from her parents, authorities confirmed.
According to police officials, the suspects allegedly fabricated the abduction to deceive family members into believing the woman had been kidnapped, prompting demands for ransom payment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident was not a genuine kidnapping but a coordinated plot designed to obtain money under false pretences. Security operatives said intelligence-led tracking and investigative procedures exposed inconsistencies in the claims, leading to the arrest of the individuals involved.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspects initially reported the supposed abduction through indirect communication channels, triggering concern among relatives and community members. However, further scrutiny by investigators uncovered evidence suggesting deliberate planning between the two suspects. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the case highlights a growing trend of criminal deception exploiting widespread fears surrounding kidnapping in parts of Nigeria.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating both violent crime and fraudulent activities, warning that staged crimes divert security resources away from genuine emergencies. Authorities urged citizens to verify information before spreading alarm and encouraged families to promptly report suspicious situations to law enforcement agencies.
Security analysts note that Nigeria has witnessed increased cases of kidnapping in recent years, making communities particularly vulnerable to panic driven ransom payments. Experts say false kidnapping claims not only undermine public trust but also complicate ongoing efforts by security agencies to address real threats across the country.
The suspects are expected to face prosecution upon completion of investigations, while police authorities continue to advise the public against participating in criminal conspiracies or attempting financial extortion through fabricated incidents.
