The Presidency has issued an official apology after mistakenly listing Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu among the posthumous recipients of national honours during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Democracy Day address at the National Assembly.
Both Fasoranti, a respected elder statesman and leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, and Dr. Madunagu, a renowned author and mathematician, are alive.
The error occurred on Thursday as President Tinubu conferred national honours on 66 individuals for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey. While several of the awards were rightly conferred posthumously on the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Humphrey Nwosu, Kudirat Abiola, and others, Fasoranti and Madunagu were mistakenly included in that category.
The mistake quickly drew widespread attention on social media, with Nigerians noting the blunder and calling for clarification.
Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, admitted the oversight and tendered an apology on behalf of the Presidency.
“It was an error and we sincerely apologise for the oversight,” Onanuga stated.
The Presidency reaffirmed its respect for both Fasoranti and Madun
