“Ogun Lawmaker Urges Community Vigilance as Nigeria Intensifies Grassroots Response to Insecurity”

A lawmaker in Ogun State has called for increased citizen participation in addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, urging residents to remain vigilant and actively support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
The appeal was made amid growing national concerns over insecurity, as the legislator emphasized that effective security requires collective responsibility between government institutions and citizens. According to the lawmaker, timely intelligence from residents remains one of the most critical tools in preventing crime and strengthening early response mechanisms.
Speaking alongside a prominent cleric, the lawmaker stressed that community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement agencies could significantly reduce criminal activities. The religious leader reinforced the message, urging Nigerians to adopt a culture of alertness while promoting peace, unity, and lawful engagement with authorities. Both speakers highlighted that security agencies alone cannot effectively combat insecurity without grassroots collaboration.
Nigeria has faced evolving security threats ranging from banditry and kidnapping to communal conflicts across several regions, prompting renewed calls for community based security frameworks. Analysts note that citizen led intelligence gathering when properly coordinated with formal security structures has increasingly become part of national security discourse.
Security experts have consistently argued that local vigilance groups, neighborhood watch initiatives, and improved communication between communities and law enforcement agencies can help bridge intelligence gaps. However, they also caution that such efforts must operate within legal frameworks to prevent abuse or vigilantism.
The call from Ogun stakeholders aligns with broader national conversations advocating preventive security strategies rather than reactive enforcement alone. Observers say strengthening trust between citizens and security institutions remains essential to achieving sustainable peace and stability.
Several reputable Nigerian media outlets, including The Punch, Vanguard Newspaper, Premium Times, and Daily Trust, have reported similar appeals by political and religious leaders encouraging citizen cooperation with security agencies as part of nationwide efforts to curb insecurity.
