On August 29, 2024, a wave of outrage swept across social media platforms in Nigeria as concerned citizens called for the arrest of a Canada-based Nigerian woman, Amaka Patience Sunnberger, for inciting violence against fellow Nigerians. The uproar was sparked by a viral TikTok video in which Sunnberger and others advocated for the poisoning of Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent.

The shocking video quickly gained traction, leading to widespread condemnation from individuals across various sectors of Nigerian society. Many expressed disbelief and anger at the inflammatory rhetoric, which included explicit calls to poison the food and water of targeted ethnic groups. In the video, Sunnberger stated, “Record me very well. It is time to start poisoning the Yoruba and the Benin. Poison their food and water. I will poison your food and water.” Her remarks were met with encouragement from others in the video, further inflaming tensions.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Director-General of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), responded to the situation via her X.com account, identifying Sunnberger and revealing that several Nigerian organizations had already contacted Canadian authorities regarding the matter. She noted that Sundberger had deleted her TikTok account following the backlash, but that efforts were underway to report her to the relevant Canadian authorities.
In light of the disturbing content of the video, many Nigerians took to social media to demand immediate action against Sunnberger and her accomplices. Users expressed fears that without prompt intervention, those involved might act on their violent intentions. One user, @DAMIADENUGA, cautioned fellow Nigerians in Canada to remain vigilant, sharing the video for awareness and urging caution in their communities.
The calls for accountability extended beyond Sunnberger alone. Many users emphasized that all participants in the live video should be traced and held responsible for their complicity in promoting violence. @AmodaOgunlere highlighted the collective responsibility of those involved, stating, “Please, everyone on that TikTok live space with her are all accomplices; they all must be traced!!!”
Another user, @AbiolaKujore, expressed shock at the support Sunnberger received during the video, while @adedirant questioned why anyone would participate in such a “demonic space.” The sentiment was echoed by others who condemned the hateful rhetoric and called for unity among Nigerians to reject such divisive ideologies.
Amidst the calls for justice, @Lekanarsenal reassured the public that authorities were already investigating the video. He urged vigilance, stating, “Most of them do delete their TikTok account, but the hand will touch them one after the other.” This sentiment resonated with many, who expressed determination to track down those involved, regardless of their location.
The incident sparked a broader dialogue about the need for tolerance and understanding among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. @Olalekakanakogun called on leaders to promote unity and discourage animosity, suggesting that it was time for Nigerians to embrace a more conciliatory approach to inter-ethnic relations.
While many Nigerians expressed outrage over Sunnberger’s remarks, some emphasized the importance of a balanced response, urging that similar hateful statements made by individuals from any ethnic background should also be condemned. The call for equity in addressing such issues reflects a growing awareness of the dangers posed by divisive rhetoric in a country with a complex ethnic landscape.
This incident is not without precedent; in a similar case reported in 2022, a 45-year-old Nigerian living in London was sentenced to prison for inciting racial hatred through inflammatory messages aimed at the Igbo ethnic group. Such cases underscore the serious implications of hate speech and the necessity for accountability.
As the situation develops, many Nigerians remain hopeful that authorities will take appropriate action against those who promote violence and division within the community. The collective outcry reflects a determination to foster a more peaceful and united society, rejecting hatred in all its forms. Video attached.
