‎The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers (NURPO) has vowed to picket the National Assembly complex, in protest against their continued inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which they described as “discriminatory and inhumane.”
‎
‎The group says the current pension arrangement has led to untold hardship among its members, with many reportedly dying from neglect and poor welfare conditions.
‎
‎Following the protest at the National Assembly, the retirees also plan to storm the Force Headquarters in Abuja to press home their demand for an immediate exit from the CPS and inclusion in the traditional Defined Benefit Scheme.
‎
‎In reaction, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has issued a warning against the planned protest, urging the aggrieved officers to return to the negotiation table rather than embark on actions that could create tension in the country.
‎
‎The PCRC condemned the protest as a deliberate attempt to discredit the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for dialogue and patience as discussions continue.
