The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will return to office on September 18, following the expiration of his six-month suspension.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, APC Chairman Chief Tony Okocha said the party is prepared to work with the governor upon his reinstatement, while maintaining its constitutional role of checks and balances.
“The governor who was suspended will return to office on September 18. The APC will work with him when he returns. However, that will not take away our right to criticise him when he does wrong,” Okocha stated.
He added that the party’s cooperation with Fubara will not extend to supporting what he described as “vicious policies,” stressing that the APC-controlled local government chairmen would align with the governor only on policies that benefit Rivers people.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state House of Assembly, while appointing former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.), as sole administrator.
