Seven Killed, 40 Injured After Airstrike Hits Market in Yemen’s Taiz!

At least seven people have been killed and 40 others injured after an airstrike struck commercial shops at a market in Yemen’s southwestern Taiz province, according to Yemen’s Houthi-run health ministry.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, at the Mawiya junction in Taiz province.A Saudi aircraft carried out the strike on shops within the market.

The incident has added to the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Yemen, where renewed fighting between Houthi forces and troops aligned with the internationally recognised Yemeni government has intensified in recent weeks.

However, accounts of the target differ. Three military sources within Yemen’s internationally recognised government told Reuters that Houthi militants had recently established a military camp near the market. A subsequent report said the government maintained that its forces had targeted the Houthi military camp and vehicles at the same junction.

The competing accounts underline the difficulty of independently establishing what happened at the scene amid the renewed fighting and the limited access to some conflict-affected areas.

Taiz has remained one of Yemen’s important frontline areas since the country’s civil war escalated after Houthi forces seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The Iran-aligned movement subsequently took control of large parts of northern and western Yemen, while the internationally recognised government retained control of other areas with support from regional allies, including Saudi Arabia.

The latest escalation comes after a period of relative calm following a United Nations-backed truce that significantly reduced large-scale fighting from 2022. That fragile calm has increasingly come under pressure as military operations have resumed across several parts of Yemen.

Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces had exchanged fresh attacks, with Saudi airstrikes reported in parts of Yemen and Houthi forces carrying out drone and missile attacks towards Saudi territory. The renewed fighting has also contributed to fresh displacement and increased concerns over the humanitarian consequences for civilians.

The wider conflict has implications beyond Yemen’s borders because the country sits along the Red Sea and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s important maritime routes connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Continued instability in the area can therefore affect regional security, shipping and international trade.

The humanitarian consequences remain a major concern. Civilians living in areas close to military positions and strategic routes face the risk of being caught in airstrikes, shelling and ground fighting.

The latest Taiz incident is therefore significant not only because of the reported civilian casualties but also because it illustrates the increasingly complicated battlefield in Yemen, where military and civilian locations can exist in close proximity.
