Six people lost their lives, and five others were injured in a tragic road accident that occurred on Monday morning in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. The crash, which involved a trailer carrying tiles and a lorry filled with soft drinks, took place at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko, along Akanran Road in the Ona Ara Local Government Area.
The accident claimed the lives of six individuals and left five others injured, including a school pupil whose mother was among the deceased.
Among the injured, four were taken to the nearby Amuloko City Hospital. Two children were treated as outpatients, while two others with severe injuries were admitted for further care. The bodies of the deceased were transported to an undisclosed hospital.
A local transport official revealed that the trailer’s brake failure caused the accident as it descended a slope. Witnesses reported that the trailer lost control and crushed a tricycle, followed by another lorry attempting to avoid a collision, which then hit another tricycle.
The crash caused significant traffic disruption, with commuters forced to leave their vehicles and walk. Two additional cars were damaged in the chain of accidents.
Sympathizers at the scene, frustrated by the tragedy, were prevented from setting the vehicles on fire. They blamed the driver of the trailer, who fled the scene, suggesting that the accident could have been avoided if the driver had swerved into a ditch instead of hitting the tricycles.
The Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital confirmed that four victims had been treated at the hospital. Two children were stabilized, while two others with severe injuries remained under care.
The state’s Federal Road Safety Commission confirmed the accident but had not yet provided further details.
