Sokoto Intensifies Rural Healthcare Drive, Upgrades Primary Health Centres to General Hospitals.

The Sokoto State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state through the construction, renovation and upgrading of healthcare facilities, with particular attention to underserved rural communities.

The initiative is aimed at improving access to essential medical services, reducing the distance residents travel to receive treatment and strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

As part of the ongoing reforms, selected Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) have been upgraded to General Hospital status, expanding access to more comprehensive medical services at the community level.

According to information published by the Sokoto State Government, facilities in Kuchi, Sanyinna, Achida and Salame are among the primary healthcare centres upgraded to General Hospital status.

The state has also pursued wider investments in hospital rehabilitation, medical equipment, electricity supply and healthcare personnel to improve service delivery.

In July 2026, the administration expanded its Safe Delivery Initiative with the inauguration of 75 upgraded Primary Healthcare Centres across the state’s 23 local government areas. The development brought the number of facilities meeting national safe delivery standards under the programme to 92, with the government targeting all 244 designated facilities by the end of 2026.

The initiative is particularly significant for maternal and child healthcare, as improved access to skilled birth attendants, essential medicines and functional medical equipment can help reduce preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Further demonstrating its commitment to healthcare infrastructure, the state government approved ₦1.12 billion in October 2026 for the renovation and completion of general hospitals in Tureta, Rabah and Dange, alongside improvements to primary healthcare facilities.

The state’s 2026 budget also earmarked ₦2 billion for primary healthcare facility renovations and ₦1.315 billion for solar power installations across 244 renovated health facilities.

However, the success of these investments will ultimately depend on more than infrastructure development. Consistent availability of qualified medical personnel, essential medicines, functional equipment, reliable electricity and adequate funding for maintenance will remain critical to ensuring that upgraded facilities deliver quality healthcare.

For rural residents, particularly women, children and low income households, bringing more comprehensive medical services closer to their communities could significantly improve access to treatment and reduce delays in seeking medical attention.

The development reflects a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system, where rural communities continue to face challenges involving healthcare access, staffing shortages and inadequate medical infrastructure.

As Sokoto advances its healthcare reform agenda, sustained implementation, transparent monitoring and measurable improvements in patient outcomes will be essential in determining the long term impact of the government’s investments.
