In Lagos, a group of soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks, led by an unidentified soldier, fatally attacked a policeman, Saka Ganiyu, after he had stopped one of their colleagues for driving against traffic at Volks Bus Stop along the Ojo Iyana Iba Road.
The soldier, who was driving a T4 Volkswagen bus without registration and not in uniform, became involved in an altercation with the officers enforcing traffic laws.
The situation escalated when the soldier called for backup, leading to a group of soldiers leaving the barracks to confront the police. During the attack, Ganiyu sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he died while receiving treatment, and his body was placed in the hospital morgue.
Military authorities have taken the soldier responsible into custody while investigations continue. The police have launched an inquiry into the incident to seek justice for their fallen colleague.
This tragic event adds to a concerning pattern of clashes between soldiers and police officers in Lagos. In August 2022, another officer, Inspector Orukpe Monday, died after being tortured by soldiers during a similar conflict in the Trade Fair area. The recurring violence between these security forces continues to raise alarms.
