  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

TCN Arrests Over 30 Suspected Power Infrastructure Vandals Along Kano Kaduna Corridor.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the arrest of more than 30 suspected vandals as part of efforts to protect critical electricity transmission infrastructure along the Kumbotso Zaria transmission line corridor linking Kano and Kaduna.

The arrests highlight growing concerns over the security of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and the potential consequences of vandalism for power transmission, public safety and economic development.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), TCN General Manager Muhammad Kamal-Bello disclosed the arrests on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, during a public sensitisation campaign in Kano. The initiative was organized to strengthen community participation in protecting electricity installations and preventing damage to transmission facilities.

Kamal-Bello said the company had received considerable cooperation from communities along the Kumbotso Zaria transmission line, acknowledging the role of residents and other stakeholders in supporting efforts to safeguard the infrastructure.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around transmission towers and other electricity installations to the relevant authorities.

TCN Warns Against Activities That Threaten Transmission Towers

During the awareness campaign, TCN highlighted the dangers associated with electricity infrastructure vandalism, including electrocution, fire outbreaks, structural damage and possible transmission tower collapses.

The company also warned against unauthorized excavation and digging near transmission towers, explaining that such activities could weaken their foundations and compromise their structural stability.

Damage to transmission infrastructure can disrupt the movement of electricity from generating stations to distribution networks, potentially affecting households, businesses and essential services.

Nigeria has experienced electricity supply disruptions associated with damage to transmission infrastructure in the past. In October 2024, for instance, damage to two towers along the 330 kilovolt Shiroro Kaduna transmission lines disrupted electricity supply to parts of Kano and Kaduna, according to News reports.

These incidents underscore the importance of protecting transmission assets as Nigeria continues to address challenges affecting the reliability of its electricity supply.

Community Cooperation Key to Protecting Electricity Infrastructure

The sensitisation exercise attracted government officials, traditional and religious leaders, artisans, civil society representatives, youths, media practitioners and electricity consumers.

TCN emphasized that protecting critical national infrastructure requires sustained cooperation among electricity authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions and host communities.

Kamal-Bello commended the stakeholders supporting the company’s efforts and encouraged residents to take an active role in preventing vandalism.

Also speaking at the event, Hakimin Gunduwawan Paki, Alhaji Ja’afaru Aliyu Paki, described electricity as essential to development, infrastructure and security.

He appealed to community members to help protect substations and other electricity facilities from vandalism, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving infrastructure that serves the wider public.

Protecting Nigeria’s Power Network

The latest arrests come amid continued efforts by TCN and security agencies to prevent the theft and destruction of electricity infrastructure across Nigeria.

Transmission towers, substations and associated equipment are essential components of the national electricity network. Their destruction can threaten public safety, increase maintenance and replacement costs, and place additional pressure on an already challenged power sector.

While the arrest of more than 30 suspects represents a reported enforcement milestone, the suspects’ alleged involvement does not establish guilt. Their individual cases remain subject to investigation and due legal process.

Sustained community engagement, effective law enforcement and the prosecution of proven offenders will be important in deterring future attacks on electricity infrastructure.

TCN’s appeal to residents along the Kumbotso Zaria corridor reflects a broader need for public cooperation in protecting national assets and supporting more reliable electricity transmission across Nigeria.
