The “Guarini” torch, inspired by the geometric forms of the dome of the Duomo in Turin designed by the architect Guarino Guarini, has completed its symbolic journey by arriving in Turin. This evening, it will ignite the cauldron at the Inalpi Arena during the opening ceremony of the XXXII FISU World University Winter Games.

A Journey Through Tradition and Symbolism

The torch has traveled across key locations hosting the Winter Games competitions. Over the past weeks, it has passed through Pinerolo, Torre Pellice, Pragelato, and Bardonecchia, towns renowned for their connection to winter sports and culture. Today, the torch reached the heart of Turin, carried by a group of city administrators who served as torchbearers, demonstrating civic pride and solidarity in support of this international event.

The relay began at Piazza Statuto, with Councilor Amalia Santiangeli starting the route. She passed the torch to Lorenza Patriarca at the beginning of Via Garibaldi. Along the bustling streets of Via Garibaldi, the torch was carried by several councilors, including Giuseppe Iannò, Angelo Catanzaro, Vincenzo Camarda, Andrea Russi, Dorotea Castiglione, and Pietro Tuttolomondo. Each participant played their part in keeping the torch moving, culminating with Domenico Carretta, the city’s Sports Councilor, who handed it to Mayor Stefano Lo Russo.

The mayor carried the torch through the Piazza del Municipio before passing it to Deputy Mayor Michela Favaro and Councilor Francesco Tresso. The relay concluded with Maria Grazia Grippo, President of the City Council, delivering the torch to Antonio Ledda. Ledda carried it along the final stretch, crossing Via XX Settembre and concluding at Corso XI Febbraio near Via Fiochetto. Despite the cold, all participants were visibly proud to represent the City of Turin in this symbolic journey.

The FISU Games: A Celebration of University Sports

The FISU World University Winter Games bring together athletes from universities worldwide, fostering a spirit of international cooperation and friendly competition. Over the next 13 days, the event will showcase eleven sports disciplines, alongside two additional categories for para-athletes, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in sports.

Events like this not only celebrate athleticism but also promote cultural exchange and the values of teamwork, perseverance, and fair play. For Torino, hosting the Games is an opportunity to highlight its historical and cultural heritage, as well as its role as a hub for winter sports.

How to Participate

Spectators can immerse themselves in the excitement by attending the competitions. Tickets are available for purchase on the official website: FISU Games Tickets. By attending, fans can support student-athletes and witness the thrilling performances that define the spirit of the Games.
