The council minorities, through questions and interventions, have highlighted several disservices and problems that require attention and concrete solutions. During a recent debate, the crucial role of the opposition in ensuring democratic representation was reiterated, hoping for their greater involvement in public celebrations and ceremonies. The minorities have confirmed their commitment, underlining that they will continue to work with loyalty and in the exclusive interest of the community.
A very urgent issue was raised by the Guarantor of the rights of persons deprived of personal liberty of the City of Turin, Monica Cristina Gallo, who presented the book “Dying in prison” . In her speech, the Guarantor brought to attention the dramatic data of the 88 suicides recorded this year among prisoners, often forced to live in overcrowded conditions and without adequate living spaces.
Gallo denounced the lack of opportunities for prisoners to access interviews with educators and psychologists, as well as the lack of reinforcement of the penitentiary police force. At the national level, the prison population exceeds the expected capacity by 4,500 units, with an overcrowding rate of 133%. In Turin the situation is even more critical, reaching 120%.
“This book does not represent a conclusion, but a starting point to continue monitoring an increasingly complex reality,” declared the Guarantor. “We do not want a dark prison, but a prison illuminated by the light of all of our eyes.”
