Three Nigerians Die in Four Days Across South Africa as Nigerian Consulate Demands Full Investigation.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has called on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the deaths of three Nigerian nationals in separate incidents across the country between September 18 and 21, 2026.

The Consulate, in a statement issued on September 28 and signed by Consul General Ambassador Nnikanwa Okey Uche, identified the deceased as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.

The deaths occurred in Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni, with the Nigerian mission describing the circumstances surrounding the incidents as deeply troubling and calling for accountability where investigations establish criminal responsibility. The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), Punch and Arise News have independently reported the Consulate’s appeal.

Three deaths recorded between September 18 and 21

According to the Consulate, the first incident occurred on September 18 at Kenlin Court on Douglas Street in the Central Business District of Bloemfontein.

The deceased, Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, allegedly jumped from a building while attempting to escape what the Nigerian mission described as police harassment and brutality.

The Consulate has called for the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall to be established through a proper investigation. Arise News noted that the allegations had not been independently established at the time of its report.

Two days later, on September 20, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde, who worked as a security guard, was reportedly shot at Spanata Bar and Grills Night Club in Mamelodi East, Pretoria.

The Consulate said the incident followed an altercation involving a South African customer whom Olatunde had allegedly attempted to stop from leaving the premises with a cup belonging to the establishment. The customer allegedly drew a firearm and shot Olatunde in the lower part of his body.

Olatunde was taken to Mamelodi Hospital but died from his injuries on the morning of September 21, according to the Consulate. The mission also alleged that the unidentified shooter returned to the nightclub and threatened witnesses.

The third death involved Christian Hillary Nnaemeka, who died on September 21 following an alleged encounter with South African politician and investigative content creator Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizok’thola team in Primrose, Ekurhuleni.

The Consulate alleged that Nnaemeka was assaulted during the encounter and later attempted to escape by jumping over a fence. It said he subsequently collapsed from injuries and exhaustion and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The allegations concerning the encounter have not been established in court, and the Consulate itself has stressed the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence.

Consulate demands accountability

The Nigerian mission said the three deaths, occurring within a short period, had renewed concerns about the safety of Nigerians and other African foreigners in South Africa.

It urged relevant South African authorities to investigate the cases thoroughly and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

The Consulate also cautioned against extrajudicial action, stressing that allegations of wrongdoing must be handled through established legal procedures and that suspects are entitled to a fair hearing.

It appealed to Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and security-conscious while the mission continues to pursue their welfare and fair treatment.

Earlier case involving Emeka Uzor recalled

The Consulate also drew attention to the February 9 death of another Nigerian, Emeka Clement Uzor, who was fatally shot during an encounter involving a reality television crew associated with Khumalo in Windsor East, Randburg.

Arise News reported that the February incident had already generated competing accounts, with South African authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Nigerian Consulate said no arrests had been made in connection with Uzor’s death at the time of its latest statement.

The latest incidents come amid broader concerns over the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa. News has also reported recent tensions surrounding attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals, although the specific circumstances of the three latest deaths remain matters for investigation rather than established evidence of a single coordinated campaign.

The Nigerian Consulate has extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and fair treatment of Nigerians living in South Africa.
