Announced by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, the policy represents a comprehensive approach to managing and reversing the exodus of healthcare workers from Nigeria. It focuses on creating a resilient healthcare workforce that is well-supported, adequately compensated, and effectively utilized to meet the nation’s healthcare needs.

The policy introduces the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, which outlines regular reviews of working conditions, especially for health workers in rural and underserved areas. It also emphasizes the importance of digital health infrastructure, including Electronic Medical Records and telehealth, to enhance healthcare delivery across the country.

Prof Pate highlighted the policy’s commitment to professional development through strategic partnerships and international training opportunities, aimed at equipping Nigerian healthcare professionals with advanced skills. Additionally, the policy encourages the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the diaspora, offering streamlined registration processes and attractive incentives.

The governance of this policy will be overseen by the National Human Resources for Health Programme, in collaboration with state governments, ensuring its effective implementation. This initiative is expected to significantly improve Nigeria’s healthcare system by retaining top talent within the country and providing better access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians.
