A devastating building collapse shook the Oyingbo community in Lagos early Monday, October 27, 2025. A two-storey structure at No. 54 Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop crumbled around 12:20 a.m. trapping residents under the rubble. Emergency responders, including the children, all with injuries.
Residents and sympathizers joined the frantic rescue efforts, overwhelmed by the chaos.
The building had been marked as distressed weeks prior. Authorities had urged occupants to evacuate—but they didn’t. “A disaster waiting to happen,” said a shaken eyewitness.
Lagos has seen similar tragedies, like the 2021 Ikoyi high-rise collapse (42 deaths and a 2025 Yaba building incident*. Lax regulations, corruption, and substandard materials are to blame.
