Two people have died and another remains missing after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, causing widespread disruption to transport, homes and public infrastructure.
According to regional authorities, one of the victims died in Tordera after a wall collapsed, while another person died in Montornès del Vallès amid flooding. Emergency services were also searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar, north of Barcelona, after the individual was reportedly swept away by a stream.
The extreme weather prompted authorities to issue a red alert and advise residents to remain indoors as heavy rainfall pushed rivers towards dangerous levels. Several communities around Barcelona were affected, with floodwaters entering homes and leaving vehicles partially or completely submerged.
The flooding also caused significant transport disruption. Local train services were affected, while flights at Barcelona airport were delayed or cancelled. Roads were flooded in several areas, further complicating movement and emergency response operations.
Catalonia’s emergency services mounted extensive rescue operations as the storm affected communities across the region. Official figures showed thousands of emergency calls and numerous interventions by firefighters, including rescues of people trapped by the flooding.
Authorities continued to monitor river levels and weather conditions as the storm system moved northwards. While conditions improved in parts of the Barcelona area, officials maintained warnings in vulnerable areas and urged residents to remain cautious.
The latest flooding underscores the continuing vulnerability of densely populated communities to extreme rainfall and rapid flooding, particularly when severe weather affects transport networks, homes and critical infrastructure simultaneously.
