On November 11, 2024, South African music sensation Tyla captured the spotlight at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) by winning an impressive three awards, including the coveted Best Afrobeats award. This remarkable achievement places her in a league of her own, as she becomes the first African artist to secure three awards in a single night at the MTV EMAs. Tyla’s victory is particularly significant as she triumphed over a host of renowned competitors, including Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems.
Tyla’s success not only underscores her unique artistry but also represents a crucial milestone for African representation in the global music industry. Having claimed the Best Afrobeats Award, the Best R&B Award, and the Best African Act Award, Tyla’s accomplishments at the EMAs mark a significant moment in the recognition of African talent on an international platform.Tyla Makes History at the 2024 MTV EMAs with Three Award Wins, Surpassing Top Nigerian Artists
The announcement of the winners was made via the official MTV EMAs account on X, coinciding with the show’s 30th anniversary. This year, the prestigious awards ceremony returned to the United Kingdom, with Manchester’s Co-op Live serving as the venue for the grand celebration of global music on November 10.
Upon receiving her awards, Tyla expressed her gratitude to her fans, affectionately known as “Tygers,” by quoting a tweet from the organizers: “Thank you Tygers once again! 🐅💕 Y’all are insane!” Her exuberance reflects the joy and pride she feels not only for her achievements but also for the support of her dedicated fanbase.
Despite her triumphs at the MTV EMAs, Tyla’s absence from the full nominations list for the 2025 Grammy Awards was noted, raising eyebrows among fans and industry observers alike. Earlier this year, in July, Tyla garnered significant acclaim by winning the Best New Artist award at the BET Awards, where she bested fellow musicians Ayra Starr and Asake for the honor.
Tyla’s rise to fame began with her debut single “Water,” which catapulted her into the international spotlight and earned her multiple accolades, including the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024. Her journey exemplifies the growing influence of African artists on the global music scene and highlights the potential for more artists from the continent to achieve similar recognition.
The 2024 MTV EMAs featured a competitive lineup, with Taylor Swift leading the nominations with seven, vying for awards such as Best Artist, Best Video, and Best Pop. Other notable contenders included Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and several first-time nominees, including Tyla herself, who was recognized alongside prominent figures across various genres.
The MTV Europe Music Awards, established in 1994, continue to celebrate and honor achievements in the music industry, focusing on both European and global artists. Each year, the awards are hosted in different European cities, making it a highly anticipated cultural event that showcases music across diverse genres and regions.
Tyla’s historic wins at the 2024 MTV EMAs not only elevate her career but also pave the way for greater recognition of African artists on the world stage, signaling a promising future for the continent’s music industry. Her achievements inspire upcoming artists and reaffirm the importance of diversity and representation within the global music landscape.
