  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

UK Coast guards Rescue Four Beach goers After Dangerous Cliff side Cave Ordeal in North Yorkshire.

British coastguard teams and lifeboat crews have rescued four beachgoers who encountered dangerous sea conditions at Thornwick Bay in North Yorkshire, England, after two of them became trapped inside a cave beneath overhanging coastal cliffs.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, prompting a coordinated emergency response involving the Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team, Filey Coastguard Rescue Team and Flamborough branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

According to reports from local media, emergency services were alerted at approximately 3:45 p.m. following reports of people struggling in the water. When rescuers arrived, one individual had managed to reach the shore, another remained in the water, while two others had taken shelter inside a cave at the base of the cliffs.

Rescue teams first concentrated on the individual struggling in the water. Flamborough RNLI lifeboat crews, working alongside coastguard personnel, successfully brought the swimmer to safety. A rescue helicopter subsequently transferred the casualty to medical personnel for further assessment and treatment.

However, reaching the two individuals inside the cave presented a more complicated challenge. The overhanging cliffs made it impossible for rescuers to conduct a direct aerial extraction from above, forcing emergency personnel to consider alternative methods.

A coastguard cliff rescue team was deployed to assess the situation, with a technician descending the cliff face to within approximately five metres of the stranded individuals. The assessment helped rescuers determine the safest approach to the operation.

As tidal conditions began to improve, rescue coordinators determined that the lifeboat offered the safest option for reaching the pair. Both individuals were successfully extracted from the cave and transferred to the rescue helicopter before being handed over to medical personnel for further care.

The operation highlighted the importance of coordination between coastguard teams, lifeboat crews and helicopter rescue personnel when responding to emergencies in difficult coastal environments.

Coastal Safety Concerns

The incident has renewed attention to the dangers associated with sea caves, rising tides and unpredictable coastal conditions.

Sea caves and areas beneath overhanging cliffs can become particularly hazardous when water levels rise or waves intensify, potentially cutting off escape routes within a short period. Visitors may also underestimate how quickly changing tides can turn an otherwise accessible stretch of coastline into a dangerous environment.

The UK coastguard authorities have repeatedly urged members of the public to exercise caution when visiting coastal areas and to seek immediate assistance if they encounter difficulties near the water.

The Thornwick Bay rescue also demonstrates why emergency services must carefully assess the terrain and prevailing conditions before selecting a rescue method. In environments where helicopters cannot safely reach stranded individuals, lifeboats and specialist cliff rescue teams can play essential roles in bringing people to safety.

Although the operation required several emergency services to work together under challenging circumstances, all four individuals were successfully rescued.
