“UK Regulator Reprimands Radio Caroline After False King Charles Death Announcement”

A UK radio station has been found to have breached broadcasting rules after it mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III, months after the incident triggered confusion among listeners and forced the station to issue an on-air correction.

The broadcaster, Radio Caroline, accidentally transmitted pre recorded material announcing that the King had died during an afternoon programme on May 19, 2026. The incident occurred while King Charles III was alive and carrying out official engagements alongside Queen Camilla during a visit to Northern Ireland.

According to reports, the announcement was linked to the station’s pre prepared “Death of a Monarch” procedure, which was inadvertently activated following a technical problem at Radio Caroline’s main studio in Essex. The material was designed for use in the event of the monarch’s actual death.

Following the erroneous announcement, the station played the national anthem and subsequently went silent for approximately 16 minutes, before normal programming resumed and an apology was issued to listeners. Radio Caroline manager Peter Moore later apologized to King Charles and members of the audience, describing the incident as the result of a computer error.

However, the UK’s broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, has now ruled that the incident breached rules requiring broadcasters to ensure that news is reported accurately and impartially and that significant mistakes are corrected promptly. The regulator received two complaints concerning the broadcast.

Ofcom’s findings also highlighted how the error unfolded. According to the ruling as reported by the BBC, a staff member carrying out maintenance accessed pre-recorded obituary files intended for the King’s death. Once the staff member realized the files were being transmitted, the broadcast was stopped, but the individual reportedly panicked and left the premises, contributing to the prolonged period of silence before the station issued a correction.

The regulatory action does not mean that King Charles III died or that the station deliberately fabricated the report. Rather, it underscores broadcasters’ responsibility to maintain adequate safeguards around highly sensitive information and to correct inaccurate reports quickly when they occur.

The incident also illustrates the potential risks associated with automated and pre recorded broadcasting systems. Emergency procedures are designed to allow broadcasters to respond rapidly during major national events, but the Radio Caroline error demonstrated how an incorrectly triggered system can transmit information of enormous public significance before adequate verification takes place.

Radio Caroline, historically known for its origins as a pirate broadcaster, now operates as a licensed radio station. The station has previously broadcast official royal messages, including Christmas broadcasts from the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.

The episode has renewed attention on the importance of editorial verification, technical safeguards and rapid corrections in broadcasting. For news organisations, particularly in an era when false reports can spread instantly across social media and digital platforms, the incident serves as another reminder that accuracy must remain central to responsible journalism.
