“Vietnam Shipwreck in Disputed South China Sea Leaves 17 Missing as Rescue Teams Search for Survivors”

Rescue operations are continuing in the South China Sea after the Vietnamese registered cargo vessel Khoi Nguyen 18 sank in severe weather, leaving 17 people missing, according to Vietnamese authorities and international reports.

The vessel was carrying 62 Vietnamese nationals when it encountered distress near Fiery Cross Reef, also known as Yongshu Reef, in the disputed Spratly Islands. By Sunday, rescue teams had recovered 45 survivors, while efforts continued to locate the remaining 17 people.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ship sank amid difficult weather conditions in waters Vietnam refers to as the East Sea. Chinese rescue authorities also deployed vessels and a helicopter to support the search and rescue operation, with nearby ships involved in efforts to assist those affected.

The incident occurred in one of Asia’s most strategically sensitive maritime regions. The South China Sea is claimed in whole or in part by several countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. The overlapping territorial claims have made the region a longstanding source of geopolitical tension, although emergency cooperation between Vietnamese and Chinese rescue teams has continued during the operation.

Authorities have not indicated that the maritime dispute was connected to the sinking. Initial reports have instead pointed to severe weather conditions as the circumstances surrounding the accident. Search teams remain focused on finding the missing passengers and crew, while officials continue to provide updates to their families.

The incident underscores the risks faced by vessels operating in one of the world’s busiest and most contested maritime corridors, where rapidly changing weather conditions can pose significant dangers to shipping and fishing activities.
