A violent encounter unfolded on Sunday night when gunmen ambushed members of the Anambra State Vigilante Service along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area. During the attack, one vigilante operative sustained injuries, and their vehicle was set on fire.
Police promptly intervened, rescuing the injured operative, who is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Security forces have since intensified patrols in the area to prevent further incidents and pursue the attackers.
According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the attackers targeted the vigilantes, leading to a firefight during which the fuel tank of the group’s operational vehicle was struck, resulting in the fire. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm to the region.
