Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons on their impressive 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Enabulele described the performance as “superlative,” adding that Edo State is proud to support a team that continues to make history in African women’s football. The victory, powered by goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie, secured Nigeria’s spot in the final and keeps them on track for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
He urged the team to complete the mission by beating host nation Morocco in Saturday’s final and bringing the trophy home, assuring the squad of Edo State’s unwavering support.
“As a state, we are proud to be associated with this current Super Falcons team that is making Nigeria proud in Morocco,” Enabulele said.
He praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his deliberate and sustained investment in sports, describing it as a catalyst for youth empowerment and talent development across the state.
“The governor strongly believes in harnessing the potential of young people and is committed to empowering them through sports,” he noted.
Enabulele emphasized that sports development in Edo goes beyond entertainment, highlighting its role in national pride and youth engagement. “Our strategy is about creating opportunities and projecting national identity. This is evident in the resilience and determination of our Super Falcons.”
Reflecting on the team’s performance throughout the tournament, he lauded the players for maintaining composure and unity despite early challenges, including delayed arrival of training kits and logistical issues.
“Even with their training kits arriving late and other setbacks, the players remained focused. They have conceded just one goal all tournament — that’s testament to their character and patriotism,” he said.
He also applauded the coaching crew for instilling discipline, unity, and tactical awareness, which he said has been critical to their journey from the group stages to the final.
“The team’s handlers deserve praise for the order and discipline in the camp. It’s clearly reflected in the players’ commitment on the pitch.”
Looking ahead to the final, Enabulele expressed strong belief in the Falcons’ chances against the host team, saying: “We have come this far not to emerge victorious. If the players reenact their past performances, I’m confident Nigeria will lift the trophy on Saturday.”
