Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has congratulated the Super Falcons for their dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the team as role models for the next generation.
In a statement personally signed and released on Thursday, the First Lady lauded the team’s display of passion, discipline, and unity, saying their performance stands as a beacon of hope for young Nigerian girls.
“I commend you, our incredible Super Falcons, for your victory over South Africa in the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Championship,” she said. “Your passion, discipline, and unity on the field are a shining example to young girls everywhere that nothing good is beyond reach.”
Nigeria took the lead through Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty late in the first half, but South Africa drew level in the 60th minute via Linda Motlhalo’s spot kick. With the game headed for extra time, Michelle Alozie’s speculative cross in the 94th minute floated past defenders and the South African goalkeeper, Andile Dlamini, sealing Nigeria’s place in the final.
Remi Tinubu described the win as not only a sporting achievement but a testament to the strength and brilliance of Nigerian women.
“You have once again shown the world the strength, courage, and brilliance of Nigerian women,” she said. “This win is more than just a ticket to the finals of the championship; it is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we believe in ourselves and stand together.”
The First Lady expressed hope that the team would go all the way to win a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
“I look forward to you lifting the cup by the grace of God. May you finish strong. Congratulations, SUPER FALCONS!”
The Super Falcons now face hosts Morocco in the final on Saturday in a rematch of their 2022 semi-final clash, where Nigeria lost 5-4 on penalties after playing with nine players. Victory this weekend would solidify Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
